Robot Hero Saves the Day for Old Spice

OldSpice

Old Spice has a new hero, and he isn’t anything like the towel-clad “Man your man could smell like” who helped the company garner millions of video hits, and millions of sales. The new hero is half man, half robot – a “Mandroid.”

While one wouldn’t think a robot needs personal grooming products, Mandroid proves otherwise. Doused in Old Spice, the robot attracts women no matter where he goes, and even when he loses half his face.

The campaign is a big departure from previous promotions which highlighted football players Isaiah Mustafa and Terry Crews, with their toned physique and big personalities. The question is whether Mandroid can generate the same affection and sales for the product.

Group Activities and Discussion Questions:

  1. Discuss the importance of branding for consumer product goods. Poll students about the top brands for personal care – for both men and women.
  2. Next, show the advertisement: http://youtu.be/Jbegu2dRLQc
  3. Bring up the Old Spice Web site: oldspice.com
  4. Divide students into teams and have them discuss whether the new campaign continues with the Old Spice brand.
  5. Have students determine key messages, consistencies, and inconsistencies. (Note: old videos can be viewed on YouTube and at oldspice.com.)

Top Ads in 2012 on YouTube

8

As consumers, we are exposed to literally hundreds of different messages and advertisements every single day. Many of these are forced upon us – we have no choice but to wade through the ad or video in order to get to our intended goal. But every now and then an advertisement grabs our attention to such an extent that we actually choose to watch it. We might even like it so much that watch it multiple times, or share it with friends, or post it on our own social media sites.

Google Insights has gathered the top 20 ads from 2012 that are the ones that fans themselves have chosen.  The 2012 YouTube Ads Leaderboard lists the U.S. ads that have the most views. The list of companies in the top include: Old Spice, Nike, Pepsi, Volkswagen, Samsung, Audi, Chrysler, and others.

View the ads – how many can you recall seeing, and perhaps forwarded to your friends and neighbors?

(PS – My personal count is 13 ads, each viewed multiple times or shown to friends!)

Group Activities and Discussion Questions:

  1. Show the site and a few of the videos to the class: http://www.thinkwithgoogle.com/insights/featured/youtube-leaderboard-2012/
  2. Divide students into teams. Have each team select and analyze an advertisement on the list.
  3. What is the target market? What is the key message?
  4. How effective is the ad at getting the company’s brand and message across to viewers?
  5. Discuss the elements that have made the video appealing.

Making Music with Muscles!

Old Spice is still setting records with creative, interactive campaigns. Think back to the “Man your man could smell like” campaign that starred Isaiah Mustafa. The “Responses” campaign played off actual consumer questions and comments to Mr. Mustafa and generated record levels for viral videos and comments. The question was how would the company follow-up on the innovative campaign using new spokesman, football player Terry Crews.

The wait is over. Using embedded interactive features on Vimeo, the new campaign videos gives viewers the ability to control Mr. Crews’ muscles, record, and share their routines. View the pre-recorded version, and then use the cheat sheet to create a musical masterpiece.

This one has to be seen and tried in class. Once again, the Old Spice guys prove how amazing they are!

Group Activities and Discussion Questions:

  1. Have students bring up the Old Spice video on their laptops: http://vimeo.com/47875656.
  2. The “cheat sheet” for making music can be found at: http://creativity-online.com/work/old-spice-muscle-music-keyboard-key/28968.
  3. Teams: Divide students into teams and challenge each team to create a routine to have Terry Crews play a catchy tune.
  4. Have each team then “perform” their routine, and have the class vote on the top routine.
  5. Discussion: What is the Old Spice brand? How does this campaign reinforce the brand message? Can the campaign translate into increased sales for the company?
  6. Teams: Select a product and design a similar interactive campaign that could be deployed using Vimeo.
