Brand Preferences by State

No one likes to be pressured, but all of us are impacted by forces that we can’t control. Every day, consumers are exposed to hundreds of ads and promotions, ranging from radio ads to the signs on the side of the bus stop. Our family, friends, social groups, and perhaps even the state in which we live all contribute to our brand preferences. Think about it – do you prefer Nike or Adidas? Taco Bell or Chipotle? Ford or Toyota? What about the rest of the state? How does where we live impact our preferences?

Curious about the answer, Direct Capital, a small business finance company, analyzed Google trends for more than 200 top brands in the U.S. Based on the results, the company created maps that show the branded landscape of the 50 states. Before looking at the charts, take a guess. What do you think is the most popular brand in your state?

Group Activities and Discussion Questions:

  1. Discuss the impact of outside influences on consumer purchases and brand preferences.
  2. Divide students into pairs. Have each pair of students list the top three brands that might be Googled in various states. List the guesses on the board.

  4. Discuss why these preferences exist. What can companies do to create a strong preference for their brand within a specific state?

Project Wing – Google’s Drone Program

Look out, Amazon – you are not the only drone in town any more. There is a new delivery drone being flown by Google. Tested this summer in Australia, Google’s program, named “Project Wing,” is the result of two years of research and development to design a delivery product. The result is small, unmanned, drone aircrafts that look like – and act like – a cross between a helicopter and an airplane.

Google tried various design approaches including a parachute for package delivery and a missile-like delivery (shooting the package downwards). They also tried to actual land the drone with package, but decided it could create problems if people (or pets) got too close to the drone and might lose a finger while trying to retrieve the package! The final prototype uses a type of filament to lower the package to customers from a drone kept at roughly 150 feet above ground.

While the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has not yet given approval for any aerial delivery service, the genie is out of the bottle and the new technologies are bound to find a use in commerce. (Pizza delivery, anyone?)

Group Activities and Discussion Questions:

  1. Discuss distribution channels and supply chain. What are the elements involved, costs, etc.?

  5. Divide students into teams. Have each team select a product that might qualify for delivery via drone and draw a diagram of a possible distribution model both with and without drones.
  6. Debrief the exercise by having students share their models and discuss the pros/cons.

No Steering Wheels Needed: Driverless Cars

We have covered Google’s driverless previously on this Web site; the cars are now a familiar sighting on the streets in California (where they are legal). Recently, Google announced a new 2014 version of the driverless car, and this one does not have a steering wheel, gas pedal, break, or gear shift levers! The new design is a departure from the previous model which required passengers to take over in an emergency.

The company is building experimental, electric-powered vehicles (top speed 25 mph) that have two comfortable seats and big windows, but have none of the hassle of driving. A smartphone app is used to request the car which automatically picks-up and drives passengers to their selected destinations. The vehicles are equipped with electronic sensors that can scan 600 feet in all directions and the front-end of the car is built from a foam-like material just in case the computer fails and it hits a pedestrian. However, if you do need to stop it in an emergency – use the big red button!
