Shoes for Athletes with Disabilities

Nike

We are all athletes of some sort, no matter if the sport is extreme or simply climbing stairs. And, every athlete needs gear that fits well and meets their needs. It shouldn’t matter what size, shape, color, or type of athlete one is, or even if the athlete has disabilities or trouble moving. Yet, for the more than 30 million Americans who have trouble walking and climbing stairs, finding athletic shoes that are easy to wear is difficult.

Nike’s new Flyease shoes were designed specifically for people with disabilities. The product, inspired by an early Nike employee who had a stroke, was helped along in design by a young man with cerebral palsy who was not able to tie his own shoes. The new shoe uses a cutting edge, wrap around zipper system that opens at the back of the shoe near the heel. This system makes it easy to slide the foot in and out of the shoe, and it eliminates laces which are a problem for people who have trouble with their hands.

The shoes are available in limited quantities, and Nike is also sending Flyease shoes to two U.S. basketball teams playing in the 2015 Special Olympic World Summer Games.

YouTube Trends: What 18-24 Year Olds are Watching This Week

Video

YouTube posts a daily trends map based on demographics as reported by its account holders. Rankings are based on the number of views and can be separated by age, gender, and location. Through the aggregated data, YouTube Trends show us the most popular video in real time and gives ideas about trends that are developing within the YouTube viewing community. The map is a visual representation of the most viewed videos over the past 24 hours across the U.S.

In last month’s YouTube trend article, we looked at the 13-17 year old category and saw top views were for Selena Gomez music (9 million views; top in 82 regions), followed by Best Vines of all times (2 million views; top in 80 regions). This month, we looked at the 18 – 24 year olds and saw both males and females watching Kanye West’s conversation with Caitlynn Jenner. The video is top in 135 regions (91%) with a message that clearly resonated with Millennials.

What are you watching?

Group Activities and Discussion Questions:

  1. Poll students: What are the YouTube videos they watch the most?
  2. What videos do they think are more popular for men vs. women? By various age groups?
  3. Bring up the YouTube trends map: http://www.youtube.com/trendsmap
  4. Divide students into teams. Have each team select a specific target market and geography and view the most popular videos in that area.

Guys, Let’s Talk about Body Grooming…

Grooming

How does a company get guys to talk about personal grooming – body shaving? It’s doubtful that most guys discuss their grooming practices and questions with other guys. So, who do they talk and listen to?

With a new razor designed specifically for the body instead of the face, Gillette hopes that it is the one guys turn to for information about body grooming. Gillette used videos on YouTube to reach its 18 – 35 year old male audience, across all devices. The campaign has a low cost per view with high engagement rates. The company estimates the campaign delivered more than 500,000 clicks-to-buy the new product. The product was number one on Amazon in its category for three months following the launch, and retains a number two ranking on Amazon today.

Guys might not always ask a friend for advice, but they certainly are listening to videos posted online. Can this be done for other personal care products?

Group Activities and Discussion Questions:

  1. Discuss with students how they find out about personal products such as body grooming. What sources would they ask and trust for advice?
  2. Show the video case: https://youtu.be/LNuVtJEQaAg
  3. Divide students into teams and have them discuss the effectiveness of the campaign. For the males in the class, would they pay attention to the videos?
  4. What additional tactics could be used?
  5. Have teams select a product that could use a similar approach. Develop the integrated campaign for this product including YouTube videos.
