Not An Average Cup of Coffee

If you love coffee, this article is for you. Heck, even if you don’t love coffee, this information may interest you.

How much did you pay for your last cup of coffee? How much are you willing to pay for a good cup of coffee? A great cup of coffee? An extraordinary cup of coffee? How much would you pay for coffee with beans that were fermented in elephant poop?

Yes, you read that correctly. And the coffee from elephant poop is roughly $150 for two-servings of the brew, or $1,500 for a pound of beans. That is, if you can find the coffee as it has a very limited supply; production is only about 500 pounds per year.

How does one get such coffee? It starts with captive Asian elephants that consume a mix of coffee and fruit. Their stomachs ferment the mixture, which eliminates its bitterness. 

This isn’t the only type of coffee made from animal poop. There is also bird-poop coffee as well as monkey-chewed coffee beans. Plus, a ‘naturally refined’ coffee from the poop of a type of cat called civets. (It’s important to note that some of these coffees are produced from animals that are not well cared-for in captivity.)

Here is a list of a few of the most expensive coffees in the world:

  1. Black Ivory – $1,500 per pound (fermented by elephants)
  2. Ospina Gran Café – $1,400 per pound
  3. Kopi Luwak – $600 per pound (fermented by civets)
  4. El Injerto Peaberry – $500 per pound
  5. Esmeralda Geisha – $350 per pound

Group Activities and Discussion Questions:  

  1. Poll students: How much do they usually pay for a cup of coffee? Now, how much would they pay for great coffee, and for unique coffee?
  2. This is a great topic for pricing. Discuss the six steps for pricing (determining objectives, estimating demand, determining cost/profit relationships, select price level, set list price, and make adjustments).
  3. Discuss the various pricing models in class: demand-oriented, cost-oriented, profit-oriented, and competition-oriented.
  4. For these products, divide students into groups and have each group work on any/all of the six steps.

Where do you golf?

How many readers are golfers? Wait. How should we define golfers? Are they regular players on a golf course consistently, or do we include folks who like the driving range but rarely walk onto a course?

The definition of ‘golfer’ has certainly been blurred by the expansion of Topgolf, as well as fueled by the use of technology in simulators and driving ranges. According to the National Golf Foundation, the number of people going to these locations now is greater than the number of people playing golf on outdoor courses.

And that’s a good thing for the golf industry in general. Long-viewed as an expensive, elitist sport dominated by males, the changing role of technology in golf now opens the sport up to more people who want to drive a ball, but not necessarily spend thousands of dollars and hours on it. Anytime an industry can introduce new consumers to its value, it has a chance of keeping the consumer’s interest.

Plus, Topgolf is more social than traditional golf courses. Topgolf’s approach is much more social, hosting groups of players with tables, couches, food and drink. Microchips embedded in the golf balls track shots, allowing golfers to virtually compete with each other, play famous courses and video courses.

As a result, some traditional country clubs and golf courses are also now more agreeable to revising old traditions and loosening dress codes, as well as designing new and entertaining games for the course and speedier play.

No need to yell “fore” on this tee.

  1. Poll students: Who would consider themselves as golfers? How would they define the market? Where and when do they play golf?

  4. Who is the target market for Topgolf?
  5. What is an off-course golfer and how can it be reached?
  6. Divide students into teams and have them research the trends occurring in golf both on-course and off-course.
  7. ALTERNATIVE: Have students explore Topgolf as a franchise investment.

Consumer Electronics Show 2024 – Technology for All

If you love technology and new gadgets, the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) is the place to be. CES is one of the largest and most influential showcases in the world for introducing innovative technology products from around the globe.

This year the Las Vegas-based show brought in 135,000+ industry professionals, making it the largest audited global tech event since 2020.  With more than 4,300+ exhibitors, including a record 1,400+ start-up companies from around the world, CES 2024 showcased innovative products and technologies that are shaping the world and solving problems.

A diverse group of companies from around the globe showcased the latest innovations in the technology industries to attendees from more than 150 countries. In all, 60% of the Fortune 500 companies were represented.

The show also provided looks at products in the marketplace as well as products-yet-to-be-launched highlighting developments and technology in the areas of:

  • Artificial intelligence (so much AI!)
  • Human security for all
  • Mobility
  • Sustainability
  • Digital health
  • Accessibility and innovation for all
  • Gaming and eSports
  • Lifestyle
  • Home improvements and food
  • Transportation

New products demonstrated how technology and wearables can help improve your health, improve accessibility, increased use of robotics, amazing television screens, and so much more.
