YouTube Trends: What Young Teens are Watching

YouTube

YouTube posts a daily trends map based on demographics as reported by its account holders. Rankings are based on the number of views and can be separated by age, gender, and location. Through the aggregated data, YouTube Trends show us the most popular video in real time and gives ideas about trends that are developing within the YouTube viewing community. The map is a visual representation of the most viewed videos over the past 24 hours across the U.S.

In last month’s YouTube trends, we looked at what the 65+ age group was watching online. No surprise, the videos were more calm and spiritual than those watched by teens. Also, no big surprise was that the total number of views for 65+ were far less than the views accumulated by teens. This month, let’s take a more in-depth look at what younger teens are viewing online.

Top in the 13-17 year old category are Selena Gomez music (9 million views; top in 82 regions), followed by Best Vines of all times (2 million views; top in 80 regions), and Maya’s Big Date (2 million views, top in 2 regions). The videos are simple, usually funny or musical. While most videos are short and sweet – clocking in at only a few minutes – the Best Vines video is more than 24 minutes long, which seems like quite a departure except that each of the videos contained within it are only six seconds long.

What are you watching?

YouTube Trends: Different Ages, Different Trends

VideoJune

Let’s take a different look this month at the top video trends in the nation. Usually, we highlight the differences (or similarities) between the sexes of an age group. But this month, let’s look at the differences between age groups. Look at the trends map for both genders in the 18 – 24 age group; the top video is Taylor Swift’s new music video, Bad Blood, with 121 million views in 148 regions. With such a dominant ranking, one might assume this video would hold the lead among all age ranges. However, in a sharp contrast to the young, the nation’ oldest age group at 65+ years favored a video with a teen speaking about how God is needed in America again. Although the views are not as impressive (213, 000) the video was tops in 71 regions in the U.S. This month’s views highlights the differences not only in age, but also in preferences per geographic region. Take a look.
