Coca-Cola Transforms Empty Plastic Bottles

Coke

Trash and recycling are important topics, but not always easily addressed by companies and individuals. Let’s admit it – trash just isn’t attractive or high on priority lists for most people. But what would happen if we could turn some of our trash, such as plastic bottle, into fun and useful items? Coca-Cola is doing this very thing in Vietnam with a campaign called “2ndLives,” a 16-cap system of unusual bottle caps that can turn empty plastic bottles into new objects such as lamps, toys, paintbrushes, squirt guns, and more.

The beverage industry has long faced attacks over the issue of plastic bottles. Campaigns such as this one can help encourage the reuse of packaging. Other examples are Pringles with an app that encouraged people to reuse chip cans as music amplifiers, and Domino’s Pizza with pizza boxes reused as jack-o’-lanterns. What can you think of for a similar campaign?

Group Activities and Discussion Questions:

  1. Show the video: http://youtu.be/rWgCQgzJOU4
  2. Poll students: What are common products that have discarded materials (similar to soda and pizza containers)?
  3. What are the challenges for these products? What would be the benefit of reuse?
  4. Divide students into teams. Assign each team one of the products and have them develop campaigns for reuse/repurpose.
  5. Debrief by having each team present its product and campaign. Vote on the winning idea.

A Classic Smack-Down: Cadillac vs. Ford

图片3

New commercials from automotive competitors Cadillac and Ford show differing views about the American work ethic.

First to the mat was Cadillac promoting its version of American values: the hard-working, hard-charging rich guy. The actor wonders why he and other Americans work hard all the time, gain riches beyond compare, but citizens in other countries are lazy because they take-off work for the month of August. What does it say about societal values of the countries? We’re the winners because we work harder (and are richer) than other populations.

In contrast to this premise is Ford’s ad showcasing its version of American values: the equally hard-working African-American female. This actor speaks of the need to work hard, believe anything is possible, and try to make the world a better place. What does this say about societal values. We’re the winners because we work hard and give a damn about helping the world.

View the two ads and decide for yourself.

Group Activities and Discussion Questions:
1. Review the two advertisements and products. Videos:

Ford: http://youtu.be/jAN61QK0aUI
2.  Discuss competition. Why is Ford taking on Cadillac with the ad?
3. What are other competitors? How should they react?
4. Divide students into teams. Have each team compare Ford with Cadillac. What are the points of difference (what make products different from competitors)?
5. Debrief the exercise.

IKEA Designs and Help for Refugee Camps

图片1

Shelter for refugees is a growing problem in many parts of the world. Of the nearly 10.5 million refugees around the globe, nearly half are children. In 2013 alone, more than two million people became refugees; this is unfortunately a 20-year record. Humanitarian efforts are not enough – the private sector’s involvement is crucial to the well-being of the refugees.

Enter IKEA’s “Brighter Lives for Refugees” campaign. The global initiative offers a $1.35 donation to the UN High Commission for Refugees (UNHCF) for every IKEA LED light bulb sold. The IKEA Foundation is the largest corporate donor to the UNHCR and has donated more than $70 million in the past three years.

The company has also influenced the view of housing in refugee camps; instead of rows of tents in neat military formation, camps can now be designed more like a village and have a sturdier exterior. IKEA has created a new living structure of 188 sq. feet that can be transported neatly packed in IKEA cardboard boxes and set-up in four hours, just like its famous bookshelves. Each shelter has solar panel roofing so that the dwellers can generate their own electricity.

Group Activities and Discussion Questions:

1. Discuss the importance of corporate responsibility. Ask students their viewpoints on responsibility, and which companies come to mind as being socially responsible.
2. Discuss the benefits to companies as a result of charitable giving programs.
3. Show the IKEA videos:

http://youtu.be/hLMPlswJQQc
4. Divide students into teams. Have each team select a well-known company and research the level and type of funding provided for social responsibility.
5. Next, have students choose another company (that does not have a charitable giving program) and develop an outline for a socially-responsible or charitable giving program.
6. Debrief the exercise by having each team put their suggestions on the white board.
