Reserve a Tesla Model 3

Like many car enthusiasts, we have been waiting for Tesla to launch a new model that costs less than the $100,000 price tag of the Tesla Model X. The wait is finally over and Tesla is now taking pre-orders for its new Model 3, priced at a more reasonable $35,000. At this price, the response was overwhelming, resulting in long lines at Tesla dealerships on March 31st to place a $1,000 deposit for the new car.

The Model 3 is not expected to be delivered until late in 2017, but nonetheless it already has an enthusiastic following. The new model is expected to have a range of about 215 miles when fully charged and be able to go from 0 to 60 miles per hour in less than six seconds, giving it an advantage over competition from Nissan and BMW.

With the introduction of Model 3, the company also hopes to increase annual sales from 85,000 cars this year to 500,000 cars by 2020. Already, there are more than 115,000 orders for the car. If all the orders turn into final sales, revenue from Model 3 could exceed $4 billion.

All electric vehicles may soon become more routine. Ready to charge?

Top Car Brands in 2016

The automotive industry is notoriously tough. Each manufacturer competes for not only sales, but also for rankings by organizations such as J.D. Powers, Car & Driver, and Edmund. Among the most popular ranking report on vehicles is the one done by independent testing organization, Consumer Reports.

To compile the report, the team at Consumer Reports test drives and evaluates multiple attributes of 270 different vehicles. To be a top tier pick, the cars must score well in road tests, crash tests, and have better predicted reliability.

The top brands this year, in order, are: Audi, Subaru, Lexus, Porsche and BMW (tied), Mazda, and Buick.

This year’s winners by category include:

  • Large car: Chevrolet Impala
  • Subcompact car: Honda Fit
  • Sport car: Mazda MX-5 Miata
  • Small SUV: Subaru Forester

The Minivan Goes Hybrid

It’s been more than 30 years since the invention of one of the world’s biggest transportation adventures. Can you guess what it is? No, it’s not space travel, or hoverboards, or autonomous cars. It’s the 33rd anniversary of the classic minivan!

No matter whether you loved or hated them, the minivan was a game-changer for the world. It was useful, roomy, family-friendly, and (usually) not very attractive, but it changed how families travelled around the world. The minivan quickly replaced station wagons in American households, selling a peak level of 1.37 million vehicles in 2000. However, once crossover vehicles such as SUVs came onto the market, minivan sales took a big hit and several companies ceased manufacturing them.

In 2017, the new Chrysler Pacifica will be unveiled as the first plug-in hybrid minivan. It aims to challenge SUVs with a sleeker body, sitting lower to the ground, with bigger wheels, and looks more luxurious than your parent’s old minivan.

Will it take sales from SUVs? Are we there yet?
