Michelle Obama Launches Healthier Drink Company

Keeping children healthy is an important cause, but it can be difficult when it comes to all the added sugars that appear in children’s food and drink. According to federal dietary guidelines, more than three-quarters of all U.S. 9 – 13-year-old children exceed the recommended limit of added sugars per day; children get about 32% of that sugar from beverages.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, roughly one-in-five children ages 2 – 19 are obese. And, obesity is linked to a number of health problems such as heart disease and Type 2 diabetes. This is an important issue to address and now former-First Lady Michelle Obama has co-founded a company selling healthier drinks to kids.

The company, named PLEZi Nutrition, has launched its first product line of drinks that contain about 75% less sugar (compared to other fruit juice brands) plus fiber and nutrients including potassium, magnesium, and zinc. Drinks contain no added sugars and are 35 calories per bottle.

Drinks come in flavors including Sour Apple, Blueberry Blast, and Orange Smash. A four-pack of 8-ounce drinks will be priced around $4.00 and are sold at Target and online at Walmart.

Netflix Ends DVD Service

It’s been a long time coming, but Netflix has announced that after 25 years and 5.2 billion discs, it is ending its DVD-by-mail business segment.

We can still remember how innovative Netflix was when it started its mail movie rental business using its trademarked red envelopes. Just select a movie and add it to your queue, get in the mail, and return it whenever you want. No late fees. No postage required. No driving to stores. Genius.

Netflix truly was a pioneer, first in mailing DVDs directly to homes, then in recognizing that viewers would move to Internet streaming services. At its peak in 2003, there were an estimated 20 million Netflix subscribers receiving movies in the mail.

Today, Netflix has 232.5 million subscribers around the world and is the market-leader in streaming entertainment. The company continues to evolve services, adding a tiered payment system that lowers the price for viewers willing to watch advertisements. It also plans to crackdown on password sharing starting the new tier in four markets – Canada, New Zealand, Portugal, and Spain. Netflix has stated that the revenue growth in Canada is faster than in the U.S.

Netflix also attributes its growth to new seasons of existing shows, plus original series such as “The Night Agent” along with original films  such as “Murder Mystery.”

Group Activities and Discussion Questions:

  2. Poll students: What streaming services do they have?
  3. Pick the top services named by students. Divide students into teams and have each team research a service, including company history, revenue, types of services, prices, number of subscribers.
  4. NOTE: As an alternative, teams could prepare a SWOT analysis for each company.
  5. Next, discuss the components of a situation analysis: company, general industry, trends, key competitors, technology, legal, etc.
  6. Ask students what data they would want in order to make a marketing decision for Netflix services. What data was used to determine it was time to cancel mailing DVDs?
  7. Divide students into teams. Have each team use laptops to do general research to answer the questions above. (ex: overview of industry, size, growth, new technologies, environmental impact, etc.)
  8. Debrief the exercise. What will be the next chapter in the entertainment streaming industry.

Farewell to Google Glass, Again…

Poor Google Glass. It had a tough run but it has finally reached the end stage. Google stopped selling the Glass Enterprise smartglasses in March, and will likely end software support this fall.

Google Glass has had an interesting path over the years, beginning with the first prototype smart-glasses launched in 2013. Glass has a smart heads-up display and camera, allowing users to connect to data, and share information and images. Glass was originally priced at $1,500 and sold on a limited basis only to developers and some early technology adopters. Concerns quickly arose about security and privacy, and using the device to capture data for Google. The high price combined with limited availability and use had doomed the first version to end sales by 2015.

However, Glass came back to market a few years later as ‘Glass Enterprise Edition’ and was targeted at corporate customers and business users. That edition was revamped to focus on users such as medical personnel, workers in training, and manufacturing employees. The price was also lowered to $999.

But it still didn’t catch on, even as other companies such as Meta and Apple continue working on their own smart-glass projects using augmented reality.

  7. Divide students into teams. Have each team draw a product life cycle and place various products and services into each stage.
  8. Next, have students brainstorm on how to reposition or revise products/services to that they can move into an earlier stage of the life cycle.
