We Know Who You Are

A Hong Kong environmental group, in conjunction with ad agency Ogilvy & Mather HK, has developed a unique approach to end the wide-scale littering problem in Hong Kong. The city produces more than 6.5 million tons of trash each year much of which ends up on the streets and the coastline. It’s a mess, and a health issue for the Hong Kong Cleanup Initiative. But littering is a quick, solitary event and the culprits are rarely identified. That is, they have not been identifiable until now.

Members of the Hong Kong Cleanup Initiative collected litter such as cigarette butts, gum, condoms, and more. Then, the trash was subjected to DNA testing, which eventually was turned into facial renderings of the trash offenders. The sample DNA provided enough information to accurately portray the eye, hair, skin, and ethnicity of culprits. The campaign then used 27 facial composites on billboards across the city.

Think again before you toss that empty coffee cup on the street.

Happy 10 Year Birthday, YouTube!

Ten years ago, YouTube’s journey began with a simple 19-second video of an elephant at the zoo. Who could have predicted that the new platform would become a global phenomenon? And now, today, it is a ubiquitous part of everyone’s online cruising patterns. Viewers are from around the world and are all ages.

YouTube has also given us new forms of communication (vloggers), new art forms (memes), and of course, new music stars (such as Justin Beiber), sports, news, celebs only found on YouTube, plus millions of cat videos!

Can you even remember what you did for entertainment before YouTube?

Group Activities and Discussion Questions:

  1. Poll students about their YouTube viewing habits. Do students remember the first time they watched a video on YouTube? What was it?

YouTube Trends: Different Ages, Different Trends

Let’s take a different look this month at the top video trends in the nation. Usually, we highlight the differences (or similarities) between the sexes of an age group. But this month, let’s look at the differences between age groups. Look at the trends map for both genders in the 18 – 24 age group; the top video is Taylor Swift’s new music video, Bad Blood, with 121 million views in 148 regions. With such a dominant ranking, one might assume this video would hold the lead among all age ranges. However, in a sharp contrast to the young, the nation’ oldest age group at 65+ years favored a video with a teen speaking about how God is needed in America again. Although the views are not as impressive (213, 000) the video was tops in 71 regions in the U.S. This month’s views highlights the differences not only in age, but also in preferences per geographic region. Take a look.

YouTube posts a daily trends map based on demographics as reported by its account holders. Rankings are based on the number of views and can be separated by age, gender, and location. Through the aggregated data, YouTube Trends show us the most popular video in real time and gives ideas about trends that are developing within the YouTube viewing community. The map is a visual representation of the most viewed videos over the past 24 hours across the U.S.

Group Activities and Discussion Questions:

  1. Poll students: What are the YouTube videos they watch the most?
  2. What videos do they think are more popular for men vs. women? By various age groups?
  3. Bring up the YouTube trends map: http://www.youtube.com/trendsmap
  4. Divide students into teams. Have each team select a specific target market and geography and view the most popular videos in that area.
  5. Discuss how this information can be used by marketers.
